Symptoms & Mental Health Disorders

Substance Abuse and
Co-occurring Disorders

People who struggle with substance use or misuse often also experience mental health challenges that can contribute to or worsen their substance use. When someone is dealing with both substance use and a mental health condition at the same time, it is referred to as a co-occurring disorder.

When individuals are facing co-occurring disorders, mental health providers can use a variety of counseling approaches and treatment methods to address both the substance use and the related mental health concerns.

Childhood / Adult Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Trauma can occur during childhood or adulthood, and difficult life experiences can affect a person neurologically, emotionally, and even physically. Trauma is often described as a life-altering experience that can shape how someone sees themselves, others, and the world around them.

Trauma can include many types of experiences, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, coercion, experiences of war or violence, and bullying, among others. The lasting effects of trauma can sometimes lead to symptoms associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Relational, Familial, Societal, and Parenting Stressors

Stress can have a significant impact on a person’s emotional, physical, and mental well-being. Challenges related to finances, family relationships, identity, partnerships, societal pressures, and parenting responsibilities can all affect an individual’s overall quality of life.

Counseling can provide supportive and specialized approaches to help individuals, couples, and families identify, understand, and work through these stressors. Through this process, people can develop healthier coping strategies, strengthen relationships, and improve their overall well-being.

Depression, Anxiety, and Mood Disorder

If you are experiencing ongoing sadness, hopelessness, irritability, nervousness, feelings of uneasiness, or difficulty relaxing and getting restful sleep, you may be experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, or another mood disorder.

While these experiences can feel overwhelming, they do not define who you are. With the right support and care, individuals can learn ways to manage symptoms, improve their well-being, and move toward a healthier, more balanced life.
